Thought Leadership – Why the UK Should be at the Heart of Energy Conversations
In 20 years working within the energy industry and alongside local and global clients, Offshore Europe has always been a cause of celebration and unity. Although Aberdeen – and the UK – has changed over the years, Offshore Europe has remained resilient, especially when factoring in its jubilant 2023 return following the hiatus it took through the pandemic. Although it had been only four years since the last event, the industry had gone through significant change. The triumph of the 2023 event was proof of how important the show is and what it means to operators and the supply chain alike.
Despite industry uncertainty and anxiety, the event still brings people together for a fantastic week to reconnect, acknowledge change, and push ahead on new paths made through innovation and new collaboration. For ATPI Energy specifically, the week of OE means we welcome so many of our European and global customers, contacts, and partners to Aberdeen, where several of our leaders and experts are based.
Naturally, as the TMC of choice for the energy industry, we have helped bring many of these contacts to the city by coordinating and supporting their travel arrangements. Having a front-row seat for what companies are converging on the city is always a huge incentive, and supporting their ability to attend or exhibit at the show is hugely rewarding.
For me and my Aberdeen colleagues, the added bonus is that it all takes place here in our city. Between the conference itself and the various social and industry events taking place around the show, Aberdeen comes to life, demonstrating that there is still plenty of life left in the energy capital of Europe and making a strong case for why the UK should be at the heart of energy conversations.
20 Years of Innovation
The UK and the north-east of Scotland have always been a significant asset for the entirety of ATPI and our global operations, and for ATPI Energy. Initially joining ATPI in 2005, for 20 years, I have been lucky to work with many amazing clients and colleagues and have seen the durability and flexibility of the energy industry.
So much has changed in the industry and in the UK since 2005. How we work, connect, communicate, socialise, and consume information has all been turned upside down. Operationally, a global shift in focus on renewable energy and understanding the need for new forms of energy has birthed new kinds of leaders to drive progress, while longstanding and household firms have also expanded their services and assets to include a holistic approach to energy security for a sustainable future, incorporating the variety of new energy forms.
Here in Aberdeen, our reputation as the oil and gas hub of Europe has shifted, supporting the UK in its ascent to the global world leader in offshore wind and other renewable energy streams. But despite wholesale changes, some things have stayed the same: Scotland and the UK’s desire, ethic, and commitment to energy innovation and finding the latest solutions for new challenges.
For ATPI Energy, we have to be aware of and understand how the industry is moving. Industry resources, including its incredible workforce, must be a priority to guarantee long-term energy security at home and abroad. We are proud to support personnel and crew through our workforce management platforms, duty of care commitment, and our day-to-day operational services to ensure that they have the tools and 24/7 support to get them from their front door to project sites, whether that is traditional oil and gas or renewable energy.
The conversations we have at this year’s Offshore Europe will likely be drastically different from those we have in a decade’s time, and although the future of energy might be uncertain, if we retain the thought leaders and talent to pass on their expertise to a new generation, then successful reinvention will only be a matter of time.
