Capturing landfill gas to reduce methane emissions and generate cleaner energy in São Paulo.
- Established in 2012 and developed by EcoUrbis Ambiental S.A., the project contributes to five Sustainable Development Goals, including Quality Education and Gender Equality.
- Located at the Central de Tratamento de Resíduos Leste landfill in São Paulo, Brazil, the project captures and destroys landfill gas that would otherwise be released into the atmosphere.
- Gas is collected through horizontal trenches before the methane is destroyed using high-efficiency enclosed flares.
- Surplus landfill gas is supplied to nearby industrial consumers through a dedicated pipeline, replacing the use of fossil fuels.
- The project manages landfill gas across approximately 183 hectares of active waste disposal area, serving a metropolitan population of more than six million people.
- By capturing methane, a greenhouse gas considerably more potent than carbon dioxide, the project avoids approximately 1.2 million tonnes of CO₂e emissions each year.
