ATP TAKE CARBON CALCULATING TO THE NEXT LEVEL
Travel management company ATP has launched one of the most sophisticated carbon calculators on the market. Built by specialist travel software supplier 'Travel Systems' in conjunction with ATP, the new system allows for variations in air travel such as journey type and class giving clients an accurate carbon footprint for each booking and can include up to six sectors to accommodate more complex travel itineraries. The financial cost of each journey is automatically shown enabling clients to decide on what offset and remedy measures they wish to take based on their individual company environmental policy.

Linked to ATP's 'Intelligent Itinerary', the carbon calculator varies each calculation depending on the class of the flight, with a bias for business and first class travel as the space in the aircraft taken up by these cabins represents proportionally more than economy, incurring a higher proportion of carbon emissions. It also factors in a journey time bias for short-haul flights, allowing proportionally more carbon emissions per mile on shorter flights, as take-off produces more carbon emissions than the cruise and landing phases.

"With the environmental impact of travel high on the political and business agenda we have seen an increased demand for sustainable travel options and information on carbon emissions reporting from our clients," said ATP's Chief Executive, Graham Ramsey. "We believe this new system is one of the most comprehensive in the industry and gives our clients instant information and the choice to take action to counteract the environmental impact of their travel itineraries."

As well as providing a carbon footprint for each individual booking, the carbon calculator is linked to ATP's comprehensive suite of management reports so that corporations can assess the impact of their travel programmes on a monthly, quarterly or a yearly basis. ATP offers clients an automatic link to industry climate experts, Climate Care, so that they can choose to make a contribution to offset their carbon footprint. However the calculation is independent of any third party carbon offset business allowing corporates and individuals the freedom to make their own offset arrangements.
